Dear 6th Grade Student and Parent,

Welcome to Aurora West College Preparatory Academy!

I hope that you are as excited about coming to Aurora West College Preparatory Academy as we are about having you come. As you enter sixth grade, you will find challenges and responsibilities that you did not have in elementary school. Your teachers expect more of you in sixth grade than was expected in elementary school. These new challenges and responsibilities will require you to study more at home, be in control of your behavior and attend school regularly. All students attending Aurora West College Prep are expected to meet the high learning standards that are set by the school, Aurora Public Schools and the State of Colorado. All students who attend Aurora West College Prep are preparing to be highly successful in our diverse global society and ready to attend a four year university after graduation from high school.

On Monday, August 3rd, we will be having Open House for 6th grade students and their parents. The open house begins at 6:30 p.m. and lasts until 7:30 p.m. The purpose of the Open House is for you and your parents to learn about West Middle School; tour the school; and meet your teachers before the first day of school. We will have a brief meeting in the gym beginning promptly at 6:30 p.m. and then you will be able to tour the building and meet teachers. When you come to the Open House please bring the enclosed schedule so that you can find the correct classrooms and be able to meet the teachers.

In this packet you will find important information for the upcoming school year. Please take time to review the information. The packet contains the 2009-2010 Parent Calendar and Handbook; student's class schedule; the APS Safe Schools Policy and acknowledgement form; the Aurora West College Preparatory Academy Dress for Success brochure; 2009-2010 Immunization requirements and a variety of forms that need to be returned on the first day of school. These forms consist of

  1. Student Verification Form,
  2. Acceptable Use of the Internet Agreement,
  3. Parent Consent Form,
  4. Aurora West College Preparatory Academy Locker Contract
  5. The acknowledgement Letter for the APS Safe Schools Handbook.

These forms need to be signed by parents and students and returned West by the student on the first day of school. Students will need to bring them to their first period teacher. Students must have returned all of the forms to their first period teacher before their locker will be assigned. Lockers will not be assigned on the first day of school, but on Friday, August 7th.

The first day of school for sixth grade students will be Wednesday, August 5. On that day:

  • Only sixth grade students will attend school.
  • The school day at AWCPA begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends 3:00 p.m. Students should not arrive on campus before 7:20 a.m. unless you are eating breakfast (the Cafeteria opens at 7:00 a.m.).
  • When the bell rings to start the day, students are to report to their first period classroom, which you will find on the student class schedule found in this packet.
  • On the first day you will have a chance to visit all of your classes, meet your teachers, learn school rules and tour the school.

Looking forward to meeting you,

Mr. Krueger
